Peter and Maria, a newly-married American couple come to a small Swiss village to hire Glooker, a famous mountain guide, to take them up the east wall of Pitz-Palu, one of the highest peaks in the Alps. They meet Dr. Jensen, a fellow American, whose wife fell to her death on a Pitz-Palu climb twenty years ago to the day. Jensen returns each year on the date of her death in the hope that the ice will yield up her body. He cautions the young couple against attempting the difficult climb, especially in the threatening weather and confesses he had failed to heed a similar warning twenty years before when the fatal accident occurred. As dawn breaks, Peter leaves the house, leaving Maria asleep, determined to try the climb alone. Jensen hears him and insists on going. Maria awakes and is determined to share with Peter the adventure and the danger. Together the trio begin the assent, waving casually to a band of students (who are later buried in an avalanche).

This short looks at the sport of rock climbing. A team of three men ascend a rock wall on Southern California's Tahquitz Rock (also known as Lily Rock) above Idyllwild. The various climbing techniques are explained, as well as the dangers one encounters in this sport. We also see the team rappel from the summit. A second team, used for comic relief, has nothing but problems.

It was as well for our nerves that neither of us had read Inoue Yasushi’s “Hyoheki” (Ice Wall). In this novel, the plot revolves around a mountaineering accident based on a real-life case. In reality (although not in the book), the disaster happened in Takidani. Like many a famous work of fiction, “Hyoheki” was first published chapter by chapter in a newspaper. This may have led Inoue to engineer a somewhat hasty denouement when the contract ran out. In any case, he eliminates his hero by sending him on a solo mission to Takidani. After climbing from the valley, Uozu Kyota reaches D-Gully. This is the last entry in his fictive diary:

A truly jaw-dropping film set in the Japanese Alps, which comes across as a strange hybrid of German Mountain Movies crossed with the delirious melodrama of Douglas Sirk. With its high camp and luscious production design, The Precipice concerns two mountaineers in love with the same woman (Yamamoto Fujiko – an icon of '50s Japanese cinema). When one of the men plunges to his death, suspicion falls on the survivor.

There’s excitement in a small mountain village in the Tyrol:  The mountain climbers Margit Sollerer and Wolf Pretorius, who’ve already conquered so many difficult peaks, have arrived to climb the “Pillar”.  Especially difficult about the “Pillar” is an extreme overhang, which even Hias Holleis’ sons Toni and Franz haven’t been able to climb.  Since Hias wants to prevent his village becoming the laughing stock of Tyrol --- which no doubt will be the case if the strangers are able to climb what the locals can’t --- he dares both his sons to try the climb again.
