Searching films

FILM SEARCH TOOLS, RESOURCES AND ADVICE

We have developed different film search methods to allow for accurate,
entertaining and instructive searches and that lead to discovering new titles:
basic, advanced, map, related searches, and projection window.

Basic search

SEARCHING FROM THE MAIN PAGE

Basic search
SEARCH BOX ALWAYS AVAILABLE
Basic search is a simple method to browse with, and it's available in all the web's pages. It's on the left column, under the MFDB logo and projection window. It allows you to filter the search by genre and theme, and to limit the text search within the following fields: title, credits, location or all fields (the already mention plus the basic description). Although it's a basic search it allows to refine the search.
SEARCH ADVICE • To see all database films:
Leave the text box blanc.

• To see all results for a genre or a specific theme:
Leave the text box blanc and select a genre or theme.

• Search by title browses within the following fields besides the title:
Series title, film's original title, film subtitle, titles in other languages. If for example, you make a title search with the word mountain, films without the word mountain in theirs original title may come up but they will have the word in any of the other fields to do with the title. This makes it easier to find films, for example, regardless of the language you search in.

• All fields search mode also looks into the basic description:
With the search box selector on all fields mode the search goes through the following fields: all the related to title, credits, locations and also basic film description.

Advanced search

THE MOST ACCURATE AND REFINED SEARCH

Advanced search
THE MOST COMPLETE SEARCH
Advanced search mode complements features in the basic mode and adds other parameters but in general it works in a similar way. This mode's biggest particularity is, it allows to view search results on a map. Map view mode, besides search results, will show the interactive map with locations of the film search results. This allows a new level of interaction and the user to redirect the search for the locations.
SEARCH ADVICE • To see all database films:
Leave the text box blanc.

• To see all films using only filters and without a text proposal:
Leave the text box blanc and use the desired filters. For example, to see all documentaries, filter by genre in documentary mode and leave the text box blanc.

• To see all filming locations on the map:
Select view mode: Map

• Title search browses within the same fields as the basic search.

• All fields search mode also looks into the basic description:
With the search box selector on all fields mode the search goes through the following fields: all those related to title, credits, locations and also basic film description.

Map search

TO SEARCH FILMS ON THE LOCATIONS MAP

Map search
DICOVER FILMS SEARCHING THE MAP
Map search is conceived for users to find films by location. Using an interactive map, the user can select a location and see all films where this particular location comes up by. It's an ideal way to discover films out of a map suggestion. The interactive map allows to zoom, move about and change maps (topographic, satellite, street view).

Note: it's possible that when using Safari browser, map markers disappear after a certain zoom point. We recommend you use other browsers.
SEARCH ADVICE • Interactive map:
The map allows you to zoom and move around. Right button (+) selects different map views  (topographic, satellite, street view).

• Films by location:
Click on a location to obtain how many films share a particular location. The See found films button will show us the film list to access each of their pages.

• To go back to the locations map:
Click on the Back to global map button.

Related searches

ACCESSING FILMS WITH SHARED PARAMETERS

Related searches
DISCOVERING LINKED FILMS
Related searches are those that allow you to find films with shared parameters with results from an initial search. For example, starting with a specific film, find other films from the same director. This is also an important feature that allows users to discover films they didn't know about. You can make related searches by: location, credits, genre, story's origin, theme, tags or related films.
SEARCH ADVICE • Related search by credits takes you to the filmography page of the person or production company you clicked on. The filmography page may hold biographic information about the person.

Related search by location works as if you has made a map search and shows all films with that location.

• Related searches by genre, story and theme work as if you had done a film search with a genre, story or theme filter using the advanced search.

Projection window

DATABASE FILM'S IMAGE CARROUSEL

Projection window
AN INVITATION TO DISCOVER NEW FILMS
Another way to find films is by checking out the projection window that is on the left column, under the logo and the basic search box. This projection window displays film images from the database in alternation and randomly. Clicking on these images you can access their film's page. This window is meant to stimulate user's curiosity by displaying intriguing images that are an invitation to discover new films.
SEARCH ADVICE • Hidden browser: When we go over the image the browser comes up to go forward or back in the images and also the film's title and year for each one.

• Random projection: Random image carousel changes whenever the page is uploaded again. Each carousel has 10 images in it. If you spot an interesting image it's worth exploring on the spot because when you change page it's possible the window projection's images change also.
