Mountain Film Institute

INVESTIGATE, PRESERVE, COMMUNICATE

Mountain Film Institute is an independent entity committed to promoting
mountain film culture to look out for present and future of this genre with a
long history and a promising future ahead.

What's the MFI
LIVING MEMORY OF MOUNTAIN FILM
Mountain Film Institute is a private organization that was created to promote mountain film culture and preserve the history and legacy of mountain film productions that talk about topics related directly with climbing and mountaineering. These film productions show us an evolution line both for cinematography and for mountaineering.

The Foundations
MOUNTAINS, MOUNTAINEERING AND CINEMA
MFI was born out of passion for the three elements that sparked mountain film genre: mountains, mountaineering and cinema.
We love mountains. We acknowledge merits for all that are passionate towards mountains. We feel devotion for cinema: for its rich language, its value as documentary material, and for its extraordinary capacity to communicate, inspire and transmit emotion.

The Origins
FOLLOWING IN JOSEP MARIA MARCH'S FOOTSEPS
MFI is inspired by a humble man's vision, an excursionista anònim (anonymous hiker in catalan), that driven by his interest in cinema, history of mountain climbing, and mountain adventures in literature, became a passionate mountain film collector. Over time and with great dedication, Josep Maria March Cabello put together a valuable collection of mountain films and became a reference for many enthusiasts.

The Spirit
INVESTIGATE, PRESERVE, COMMUNICATE
Josep Maria March's approach to mountain film was determined by three key aspects of his personality:

• A curious, studious character and a passion for historic accuracy
• A collectors spirit
• A will to share his knowledge an his belief in altruism

These are precisely the same three aspects that depict Mountain Film Institute's spirit. They also give coherence to the three great goals the institute was founded for: Investigate, preserve, communicate. MFI's existence doesn't make any sense without the three of them.

MOUNTAIN FILM INSTITUTE' S MISSION

INVESTIGATE, PRESERVE, COMMUNICATE

Investigate
BUILDING MEMORY
Mountain Film Institute putts great efforts into its investigation work as it's fundamental to be able to reconstruct history and follow present and future evolution of mountain film.
Mountain film productions are often off the commercial circuit and have a discrete presence in the general audiovisual scene. This is why many of these productions are at risk of being forgotten. As time goes by remembering the fact they existed itself becomes a challenge.

Preserve
MOUNTAIN FILM INSTITUTE ARCHIVES
Regardless of their documentary and historic value, mountain films are extremely vulnerable to loss, destruction or oblivion.
This is the reason it's important to create and keep up a films archive as rich as possible that allows to preserve and save them from disappearing and also to study them. Mountain Film Institute's archives contain an important digitized film collection as a result of MFI constant efforts to build up its catalogue.

Communicate
PRMOTING MOUNTAIN FILM CULTURE
At MFI we believe knowledge doesn't mean a thing unless it's shared. Therefore, we consider it's essential for us to make our knowledge available for the community. This we do to promote Mountain film culture but mainly out of a strong humanistic belief.
Mountain Film Database web is MFI's dissemination platform and also a platform aiming to get users' complicity to become a tool for knowledge exchange that befits the whole community. As it should be our outreach action starts with a premise we can never give up, absolute respect for author rights.

MFDB ADVERTISING SPACES AND DONATIONS
MFI is financed through Mountain Film Database selling advertising space and sponsoring. We also add up on our income budget, donations from individuals, companies and institutions.

Collaborations
ACTIVE PARTICIATION IN THE MFDB PROJECT
Contributions from our collaborators are fundamental for the Mountain Film Institute because they build up enormously to the project's development. But, contributions in the way of documents, cinematographic material, data or information relevant to our investigation work and research are as important or even more than monetary contributions.
We really value our collaborators altruistic action and we encourage anyone that wishes so, to participate in our project in any kind of way they believe interesting. To that purpose they can contact MFI via the Contact form or by visiting the collaborators' page.
