DATABASE FILMS

1. Why can't I find films on mountain geography and cultures? Mountain film is a generic name for a broad thematic scope. Nevertheless, at MFDB we have specialized in films to do with climbing and mountaineering. See Thematic scope in Film criteria.

2. Why is it I can't find amateur films I consider have more quality than some antique ones? It's certainly true that many current amateur productions are, in many aspects, of a higher quality than many antique productions, but antique productions are unique and have are highly interesting historically speaking. Also, usually these are productions that were edited and distributed with means of that particular time and would be classified into the professional productions group. See Production type in Film criteria.

3. Why can't I find popular films that should be in the database? Currently the website is in test mode (beta edition) and only contains part of all the films in the database. We are working intensely to incorporate all our catalogued titles from the Mountain Film Institute. We have planned to finish updating references in the next months. Test mode will go on at least until we finish entering all our titles in the database.

4. Why can't I find any film under some of the genres? Currently the website is in testing mode (beta edition) and only contains part of all the films in the database. We are working intensely to incorporate all our catalogued titles from the Mountain Film Institute. We have planned to finish updating references in the next months. Test mode will go on at least until we finish entering all our titles in the database.

5. Inspired story and story with real characters. Aren't they the same thing? Not exactly. Some films are inspired by real life facts but develop a storyline with fiction characters and don't mean to represent what happened in reality. This would be the case with La mort d'un guide (1975); This is a story inspired by the Desmaison and Gousseault tragedy in the Jorasses in 1971, but it has a storyline with fiction characters and situations. On the other hand, some films take real life characters to develop the storyline with a great dose of fiction. This would be the case of Der berg ruft (1938), where leading characters play the role of Whymper and Carrel in a story with a lot of fiction in it. In some other cases, the film has both: real life characters and an inspired story, and is different from films based on true stories because they are a lot less like the real story (see Story origin in Film classification).

6. I have a different opinion about how to classify a specific film. What can I do? We may have made a mistake when classifying a film or when uploading some of its data, and this is why we would be very grateful to users' contributions that wish to improve and perfect any data in our database. You can alert MFDB administration about any mistake or discrepancy to do with a film sending a message via the Contact form.

Searching films

TOOLS AND RESOURCES TO FIND FILMS

7. How can I see all database films? Simply by leaving blanc the text box in the basic or advanced search and clicking search (this is the equivalent of the See all films feature). Also, results for this search in Show all mode may be filtered limiting other search parameters.

8. What films come up on the carousel and which in the list? Exactly the same ones. Each page displays the same films in the carousel and the list. Carousel and list are two complementary ways of showing information for the same films. Each one has it's advantages so they coexist in the page. The list allows for a quick glance as a whole. Carousel lets you see information in detail for each one of the films without having to access the film's page.

9. Why is it that when I search by title with a word I get films without the word in their title? This is because the search in Title mode isn't constricted to the Title field but is done in other fields related to the title: series name, film title, film subtitle, titles in other languages. For example, if you make a title search with the word mountain, films that don't have the word mountain in the original title will come up because they do have it in other fields to do with the title. This makes finding films easier regardless, for example, of the language you use.

10. Why locations from different regions from the one I chose come up on the map? When you search for a film by region in the advanced search and you choose the map view mode, all locations of the found films will be showing regardless of the region. If, for example, you are looking for films with locations in the Alps, the film list will show all films with some of its location in the Alps. So, the map will show these locations but also other locations in the films even though they are out of the Alps. The map shows films' locations regardless of the chosen region.

11. Why do markers disappear from the map after certain zoom point? This is a problem we have spotted, that has to do with the Safari browser. It's possible it's a problem to do with incompatibility with map suppliers. We recommend you use other browsers that don't present this problem.

12. Can't I search films by subgenre? Currently this feature is not available. You can search films by genre but not by subgenre for the time being. We'll try to implement this feature soon because we believe this would be very interesting.

Film page

FILM PAGE CONTENT AND FEATURES

13. Film pages don't have much content. Why? Sometimes it's because we don't have more information on the film; but most times it's because we are still in the testing and development phases and still updating data. Our plan is to finish updating content and finish beta phase in the next months.

14. I have spotted some mistakes on a film's data. What can I do? We may have made a mistake when uploading a film's data, and this is why we would be very grateful for users' collaboration that wish to improve and perfect any data in our database. You can alert MFDB administration about any mistake or discrepancy to do with a film by sending a message via the Contact form.

15. How can I delete a film from my lists? The FavouriteWatchlist buttons are reversible and are used to add or delete films. Button symbols will change from + to - depending on if the film has been added or not to the list. To add click on the button with a + symbol; to delete click on -.

16. How can I modify or delete my rating for a film? The vote is just one. One user, one vote. Once you have voted, you can modify your rating by voting again or deleting it by clicking on the red button with an x next to the rating stars.

17. Why does the message button in the forum take me to the forum and not to a specific topic? This button is to direct us to the forum, and once you are there you can search or register a topic to do with the film depending on the forum section. This is why the button in the film page doesn't take us to any specific post.

User reviews and added data

PROVIDING FILM DATA AND OPINIONS

18. How can I edit a comment I left in the film's comment section? Each user may leave only one review for a film. These reviews can be edited at any point. To edit it, you need to go to the Film reviews in the My MFDB private area.  Once you have signed in you can see a list with all the films you have reviewed and edit them.

19. How can I delete a comment from the film's comment section? Currently reviews cannot be edited but can be deleted. If the user wishes to delete it, he/she will have to send in a petition via the Contact form.
